Long-form drones, samples, and field recordings are manipulated live to access parallel emotional states in herself and her listeners. She is best known for her unusual approach to processed harmonium, multilingual vocals, and samples — through analog synthesis, pedals, and cassette tape.

In recent years, her practice has shifted toward site-specific commissions for immersive audiovisual experiences rooted in sound and experimental composition.
In 2026, BINT completed an intensive training residency in the khayal vocal tradition with the renowned Saami Family. She is currently working on new music.

Since 2023, BINT has created commissions for ISSUE Project Room (NY), the Arab American Film Festival (Dearborn), Yale Center for Collaborative Arts &#38;amp; Media (New Haven), The Lab (SF), and Another Sky Festival (London). See Rituals page for details and footage of these live works.
︎ BINT is not accepting new music/sound projects at this time, including performances and shows.

	BINT is an interdisciplinary artist and musician working across sound, installation, and visual forms — applying contemporary methods to the traditional multicultural technologies of her ancestries (Pakistani, Egyptian, American).

Site and audience activation are central to her practice. Her work operates from cultural art forms she grew up around, where craft has historically served communal and utility functions beyond ornamentation. Through multimedia processes, she extends these models into the present, creating installations and experiential performances that transform environments into participatory ritual sites.

As a musician and sound artist, BINT works with dissonance, distortion, long-form drones, sampling, and noise to access altered emotional states. She is known for her unconventional use of processed harmonium and multilingual vocals, shaped through analog synthesis, pedals, and cassette tape.

BINT has exhibited and performed internationally, across a wide range of commissions and collaborations including Joan La Barbara, Black Sabbath, Yale Center for Collaborative Arts &#38;amp; Media, ISSUE Project Room, and the Arab American National Museum.
In 2026, BINT completed an intensive training residency in the khayal vocal tradition with the renowned Saami Family. She is currently working on new music.

	Mareekh مريخ :
Multimedia Martial Talisman
2021
	Built over 17 weeks using traditional talismanic methods with consecrated materials, sound, and inscriptions, Mareekh مريخ is a multimedia installation that channels the Martial current as a “feminine call to arms.” Timed sounds were recorded and cut to tape at specific intervals associated with the planetary influence of Mars. Activated by iron elements interacting with magnetic tape, the installation reimagines the talisman as a collective, repeatable experience rather than a compact object for private use.

Mareekh مريخ is a multimedia talismanic installation created to attune the experiencer to the planetary energies of Mars, specifically as a “feminine call to arms.”
This martial-feminine current recurs throughout BINT’s practice, shaped by her training, advocacy, and natal chart, and engages Mars not as a gendered force but as a catalyst for agency, protection, and directed action across body, mind, and spirit.

Islamic intellectual history contains a robust tradition of talismanic sciences, in which planetary forces, sacred letters, number, sound, and precise timing were understood as operative technologies rather than symbolic metaphors. Mareekh draws from this lineage, particularly medieval Islamic cosmology (c. 9th–14th centuries), where Mars (al-Mirrīkh) was intentionally worked with through elected moments, material correspondences, and inscriptional practice.

Unlike amulets or charms—often treated as passive tokens of luck—a talisman functions as a technology designed to concentrate, stabilize, and transmit specific forces toward a defined aim. Every element of Mareekh—material, inscription, number, and sound—was deliberately selected and constructed within traditional talismanic guidelines to support this purpose.

The installation was activated during a precise election chart at its “birth” moment. Timed sound loops cut to cassette tape ran for 5 minutes and 25 seconds, with all footage and audio captured during this window of ensoulment.

METHODOLOGYThe piece was constructed over 17 weeks, with each stage aligned to astrologically significant days and hours. Traditional techniques from the Shams al-Maʿarif and the Ghayat al-Hakim (known in Latin as the Picatrix) informed the process, alongside BINT’s study and background in Sufi and training in Western Mystery Traditions. Contemporary Martial adaptations of Kufic calligraphy and Islamic illumination were incorporated throughout.

Astrologer Sasha Ravitch was consulted for key electional calculations, which were observed at crucial moments of construction — including composition, recording to tape, the introduction and consecration of metals, and the inscribing of texts.&#38;nbsp;

Calligraphy &#38;amp; Inscriptions
The entire piece is comprised of Islamic Divine Names (القوي Al Qawee, Ya Qaahirيا قاهر , Ya Muntaqim يا منتقم , and العزيز Al Aziz) and Qurʾanic verses, inscribed in abjad-based repetitions that generate mathematically significant permutations of five-fold patterns. Each inscription was carefully counted, timed, and arranged to align with Martial number associations, resulting in hundreds of precise markings across the piece, all created during specific elected windows of time. Traditional rituals of Sufic dhikr (mantric repetitions of the Names), together with ritual purity and controlled environmental conditions, were observed throughout the inscription process.

The following Qurʾanic verse was inscribed five times using an ink made of dissolved firearms (shown below). This same verse and ink also appear in the limited edition original prints detailed at the bottom of this page.

MATERIALSStone &#38;amp; Metal
Five onyx obelisks with iron content were magnetized to anchor and conduct the Martial current. Metal components were layered with iron and steel filaments.

Pigments &#38;amp; Inks
Red elements were formed with cochineal beetle pigment and the artist’s blood. The black inscriptions along the primary obelisk use a highly magnetic iron ink made of dissolved firearms by ink-maker Thomas Little (@a.rural.pen).&#38;nbsp;

SOUNDS
The audio component was composed in the key of C with Martial field recordings, dhikr invocations, analog synthesizer drones, and harmonium. Recorded directly to cassette tape, the loop was cut to 65 seconds and played five times — durations aligned with numerical abjad associations of Mars. At the elected “birth” moment, playback of the loop activated the talismanic grid, its electromagnetic current subtly interacting with the magnetic inscriptions and iron-onyx stones.

ACTIVATION &#38;amp; DOCUMENTATION
The installation was activated at Widow’s Son Productions (Los Angeles) with assistance from C.R. Sanders. All footage and sound were captured during the 5 minutes and 25 seconds of the original loop, marking the talisman’s “ensoulment.”
At the elected “birth” time of the piece, the talisman grid and current running through it was activated by the playing of the cassette tape loop. The electromagnetic nature of the tape has slight interactions with the highly magnetic ink made of dissolved firearms, running around a magnetized iron-onyx obelisk.

LIMITED EDITION ORIGINAL PRINTS
Five limited edition original prints of Mareekh have been made available for sale and personal ritual use.
Each print is individually hand-calligraphed by the artist in contemporary Kufic Arabic style, using the magnetite firearm ink described above. The central Qurʾanic verse appears five times, with each inscription carefully executed to mirror the talisman’s Martial design. Metallic accents are hand-painted in iron-mica infused ink, making each print a unique, consecrated work.

	Offerings were curated from family stock and local sources: freshly baked baklava, buttery couscous cooked on her mother’s stove, dates from Madīna dusted with rosemary from her mother’s herb garden, and frankincense‑amber incense brought from Egypt and Morocco. These were presented in heirloom silver dishes, crystal glassware and jewelry inherited from her mother’s household, alongside a family Qur’an, braided hair and other personal mementos.
The altar functions as a material conduit for the performance’s alchemical intent—inviting the ancestors to partake, to be appeased, and to lend their presence to the work. For a deeper look at the Mother of My Mothers project, see the dedicated page.&#38;nbsp;︎︎︎

	Talismanic Face Mask for Protection and Healing During COVID-19May 2020
	Hand-sewn, silk-lined canvas mask inscribed with Divine Names and Qur’anic prayers according to semi-traditional talismanic methodology for protection and healing during COVID-19. Constructed entirely by hand, the mask was created under specific planetary (☿ and ☉) and lunar timings, with each word and symbol meticulously measured, counted, and inscribed in precise numerical sequences. This work adapts the tradition of Islamic talismanic garments — historically made for warriors and rulers — into a contemporary protective object for a time of collective crisis.

	CONTEXT &#38;amp; INSPIRATION
This mask was conceived during the early months of COVID-19, while the artist was quarantining at her mother’s home during Ramadan. Daily life became infused with both isolation and reconnection: to family, to the rhythms of daily Islamic rituals and observances during the holy month, and to a global Muslim community collectively experiencing Ramadan under lockdown. Weekly Zoom dhikr sessions with the artist’s Sufi dervish siblings quarantined across the globe, chanting the Divine Name Ya Shafi (“The Healer”), directly inspired the work.

The central inscriptions Arabic calligraphy on this mask read يا شافي (Ya Shafi) the divine attribute, or name of God translating to calling upon “Oh Healer” as well as المهيمن (Al Muhaymin), “The Protector” and الجامع (Al Jami’) “The Unifier”. Elements of color, shapes, letters and numerology were also used for implementation of these holy words.

TALISMANIC TRADITIONDuring the Mamluk and Ottoman periods (13th–17th centuries), Islamic talismanic garments were crafted for soldiers and sultans to wear beneath their armor, providing both physical and spiritual protection. In this mask, that tradition is reimagined for the pandemic era: the essential face covering itself becomes the armor. Its inscriptions were designed not only to shield the wearer but also to radiate blessings of healing and protection outward to all who encountered it.

		<description>
	Taxidermia Series 2014

	A three‑part mixed‑media sculpture series that re‑contextualizes a set of the artist’s former favorite hijabs (Muslim head covering)—objects that have functioned simultaneously as sanctuary, marker of belonging, and, at times, a constraining uniform—into meticulously crafted moth specimens.

&#60;img width="2400" height="1906" width_o="2400" height_o="1906" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3b9575ba2e8eed1e38f41ddcf614074c471228d836b110344964e6a34397f142/Taxidermia1-OP-2400.png" data-mid="237709622" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3b9575ba2e8eed1e38f41ddcf614074c471228d836b110344964e6a34397f142/Taxidermia1-OP-2400.png" /&#62;

	Each moth is mounted on linen within custom wooden display boxes; the original installation paired the winged form with the corresponding school ID card that documents the specific hijab’s wear‑date, thereby mapping a personal chronology from junior‑high through sophomore year of college. Because the ID cards function as archival anchors rather than structural necessities, the works have also been exhibited independently, allowing curators to present the moths as autonomous objects within a broader collection. The wings were constructed from the scarves worn in each school ID– overlaid with hair, fur, copper wire, ink, acrylic paint and various other material. Hand‑engraved brass plates assign each specimen a fictional taxonomic designation. Across the wings of the three moth specimens are inscribed in Arabic with the verses from the Quran (33:59) which many hold as the definitive prescription of the headscarf for all Muslim women, foregrounding the cultural and religious discourse surrounding the headscarf.

Moths, celebrated across mythologies for their nocturnal pursuit of light, operate here as a metaphor for transmutation: the garments that once served as a protective chrysalis are recast as winged vessels that willingly burn toward illumination, echoing alchemical and phoenix‑like rebirth. The series therefore interrogates the material memory embedded in fabric—its capacity to house identity, to imprison, and ultimately to dissolve into a new form.

Arabic Calligraphy
	Bint’s calligraphic work with the Arabic language integrate a wide range of media and is deeply influenced by her training since childhood in traditional Islamic art, which the artist still continues to study abroad.&#38;nbsp; Consecrated handmade inks, metals, natural pigments, specific dirt, sands and other unique materials are often incorporated into Bint’s work with script.
